Howden School

Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education

Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education (PSHCE) is a subject that focuses on strengthening the knowledge, skills and connections to keep children and young people healthy and safe and to prepare them for life and work. Our goal is to equip our learners with the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and practical skills to live healthily, safely, productively and responsibly.

“Here at Howden we want our Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education (PSHCE) programme to help our young people develop fully as individuals, as family members and as members of their community. This subject does not only support students’ health, relationships and well-being, but also their academic attainment.”

  • Mr R. Gardiner, Subject Leader of PSHCE

Key Stage 3

Year 7

We have a clear focus on transition in those early months to support our new students joining us from primary school. We look at confidence, self-esteem and aspirations before looking at other topics such as online safety, healthy relationships, lifestyle choices and basic money management to address the newly emerging needs of our young learners.

Year 8

As our young learners become a little more mature and progress into Year 8, students will look at advanced elements of some of their previous topics including LGBTQ+, prejudices, online grooming and body image as we continue to tackle some of the biggest issues that our students will encounter during adolescence.

Year 9

In their final classroom year of PSHCE at Howden, students will look at the justice system, county lines operations, peer pressure and abusive relationships and the use of drugs, alcohol and other stimulants. We recognise that this is a pivotal year for our young people, which is why we continue to look at these topics beyond Year 9 and explore them during tutor time sessions in KS4.
