Health and Social Care

Health and Social Care is the backbone of a compassionate society.

It inspires students to stand up for others, challenge injustice and understand the story behind every individual they meet. Above all, it empowers students to realise that their knowledge, choices and actions can change lives for the better.

The Health and Social Care curriculum at Howden School empowers students to understand, champion and deliver exceptional care. We place dignity, rights and individual life experiences at the heart of our teaching, helping students grasp what it truly means to support others with compassion, respect and professionalism. Students develop practical skills, strong communication and reflective habits that prepare them for real-world care environments, leaving our school confident, capable and guided by firm ethical principles.

Our curriculum is intentionally ambitious. Students build rich knowledge and a deep understanding of the values, theories and practices that shape high-quality care. They explore how physical, intellectual, emotional and social needs intertwine — and how skilled, informed practitioners can transform outcomes for individuals and communities. With critical thinking and continual reflection embedded throughout, students revisit and deepen their understanding over time, growing into thoughtful, resilient citizens ready to thrive in life, learning and future work.

At Howden School, Health and Social Care is more than a subject — it is a pathway that inspires young people to make a genuine and lasting difference.
