    Our School Day

The school day at Howden School is carefully structured to balance strong academic focus, student wellbeing and access to a broad, ambitious curriculum.

Students are able to arrive from 8:15am. At 8:35am, students line up before moving promptly into ACE (Achievement, Character and Enrichment) at 8:40am. ACE time is a key feature of the school day, supporting literacy, numeracy, reading, personal development and wider learning habits.

The main timetable consists of six one‑hour lessons, allowing subjects to be taught in depth while reducing unnecessary transitions during the day.

Supporting Personal Development and Positive Behaviour

Break and lunchtime provide valuable opportunities for students to develop self‑management and social skills in line with our shared values of Aspiration, Courtesy and Excellence. During these times, students build positive relationships, practise respectful behaviour and learn to take responsibility for their actions.

Clear expectations and consistent routines support students to make positive choices, develop confidence and contribute to a calm, respectful school community, ensuring they are ready to engage fully in learning.

Student Drop Off and Pick Up

A large number of our students travel to school on foot or by cycle; therefore, road safety is of paramount importance. Wherever possible, we ask parents/carers who choose to drop their child off by car to use the lay-by at the top of Derwent Road. This helps to reduce congestion and ensures the immediate vicinity of the school remains safe for all students.

    Site Safety Expectations

    • No vehicles are permitted on the main school site for student drop off or collection.
    • The school car park at the front of the building is not to be used for drop off or collection. This area is reserved for staff, visitors, and families with accessibility needs during the school day.
    • These expectations are in place to protect students moving around the site and to minimise risk.

    Parking Considerations

If you do need to drop your child off nearby:

    • Please be considerate to local residents.
    • Do not park across driveways.
    • Avoid parking in a way that obstructs traffic or creates unsafe conditions.

    School Transport (Bus Travel)

Many students travel to and from school via school transport.

    • The back entrance on Station Road is strictly for school buses only.
    • Students using school buses should follow driver instructions to ensure safe boarding and disembarking.

    Applying for a Bus Pass

If the Bus Does Not Arrive

If a scheduled school bus does not turn up:

    • Students should wait safely at the stop for a reasonable period.
    • If the bus still does not arrive, parents/carers should make alternative arrangements where possible.
    • Please report the issue through Bus Wise as soon as possible so it can be investigated School transport issue - Buswise.
