Home learning encourages students to take ownership of their learning, building confidence, independence and the discipline needed to achieve highly. Through regular, purposeful tasks, students are supported to aim high and take pride in their work.
Home learning is set through online platforms such as Sparx and Educake, ensuring students engage with high-quality, subject-specific practice that reinforces classroom learning. Parents and carers are able to monitor and support this through the Arbor Parent and Student App, where all home learning is clearly communicated.
Through this approach, students develop essential skills, including:
These skills are fundamental to both academic success and future pathways beyond Howden.
As students move into Key Stage 4, expectations around home learning increase significantly. Independent study becomes a priority, with students expected to take greater responsibility for their learning and begin structured revision for GCSE examinations.
To support this, we explicitly teach revision strategies as part of our ACE (Aspiration, Courtesy, Excellence) provision. Through this, students learn how to revise effectively, manage their time and apply strategies such as retrieval practice, spaced learning and exam technique. This ensures that all students are equipped not just to work hard, but to work effectively.
Our approach to home learning is driven by our values:
At Howden, we know that students who engage consistently with home learning and develop strong independent study habits make greater progress, achieve higher outcomes and are better prepared for the challenges of the future.
