At Howden, we are committed to fostering a positive culture where achievement, effort, and exemplary behaviour are consistently recognised and celebrated. Rewarding students is a shared responsibility across the whole staff team, ensuring that all students feel valued and motivated to succeed.
All teachers, across every curriculum area, actively recognise, praise, and reward students as a core part of our agreed policy. This consistent approach ensures that positive behaviour and achievement are reinforced throughout the school day in every learning environment. Teaching Assistants and support staff play an equally important role, offering praise and encouragement whenever appropriate, contributing to a unified and supportive ethos.
How We Recognise and Celebrate Students
We use a wide range of strategies to celebrate student success, tailoring recognition to both individual and whole-school achievements:
- Praise and Encouragement – Immediate verbal recognition is used regularly in lessons and around the school to acknowledge effort, progress, and positive conduct.
- Achievement Points – Students earn points for demonstrating effort, progress, positive attitudes, and meeting expectations. These contribute to wider reward systems and milestones.
- Positive Communication with Home – Text messages home are sent to share good news quickly and reinforce success. Postcards home provide a more personal acknowledgement of exceptional effort or achievement, helping to strengthen the home–school partnership.
- Certificates – Certificates are awarded to recognise specific accomplishments, such as academic progress, resilience, or contribution to school life.
- Half-Termly Whole School Rewards – Students who consistently meet expectations or achieve set targets are recognised with rewards at key points throughout the term.
- Celebration Assemblies – Regular assemblies highlight student success, providing a public platform to recognise achievements and reinforce a culture of pride and aspiration.
- End of Year Rewards Activities – Students are given the opportunity to take part in special activities at the end of the academic year as a reward for sustained effort, behaviour, and commitment.
Our Commitment
Through this structured yet flexible approach, we aim to:
- Promote high expectations across all areas of school life.
- Motivate students to achieve their best.
- Recognise both effort and attainment.
- Build confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging.
By celebrating success in a variety of meaningful ways, we ensure that every student has the opportunity to be recognised and encouraged.
