SEND

Special Educational Needs and Disabilities are addressed by the whole school as Howden School is an inclusive school. 

We have an excellent Learning Support Team who provide student-centered support to those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.

The SENDCo leads our experienced team of Learner Support Assistants, Enhanced Resource Provision Manager and The Bridge Manager in providing support to our most vulnerable students, alongside our pastoral team and teaching staff. We support students with SEND to make progress across the curriculum and to engage in all aspects of school life. Students typically learn alongside their peers, with staff supporting and scaffolding learning to meet their needs. We enable effective inclusion by regularly engaging in training, to ensure SEND needs and strategies that support learning are understood and can be implemented. We value partnership work with our parents and, with them, work closely with our professional partners to provide the best support we can for our students.

Enhanced Resource Provision

Our Enhanced Resource Provision (ERP) is a blended model of using bespoke and flexible timetables, including time in the ERP and Mainstream lessons, to enable our students to access and succeed in the mainstream curriculum. We aim to help these students break down any barriers to learning they may have and help them develop both socially and academically in preparation for adulthood.

At Howden School, we have an inclusive environment where students feel safe and valued, breaking down the barriers to learning one step at a time. For students on the Autistic Spectrum, these barriers to learning are not always based on academic ability; they often affect social skills, communication, emotion, fixed thoughts and sensory processing.

To overcome these barriers, we offer a range of services which are individually catered for each child’s needs and can be adapted as time and situations progress:

• Access to the ERP Room and sensory areas
• Teaching Assistant Support in lessons
• Specific Interventions
• Input from the Local Authority Autism Practitioner
• Lego-based therapy sessions
• Specific work spaces/laptops for ERP students
• Use of the ERP base for supervised breaks & lunches away from crowds
• Access to a range of sensory equipment and resources
• Visual Aids such as visual timetables
